Attendance is a politics.

Four years of the ugly middle: supply, committees, the Articles. Presence is how quiet men govern. The loud can visit. Someone has to remain after the motion adjourns.
Vote the resolve you did not move.

His brother's sentences. His aye. That is not diminishment. That is how a motion becomes a state's voice instead of a man's brand. Second the household. Then go to dinner.

Speeches vanish at the door of a committee of five. Paper remains. If you cannot abide the small room, you are an entertainment. Abide it.
Leave when the vote no longer needs you, not when you are bored.

Exit is a judgment. He made it without a farewell tour. Boredom is not a reason. A better use of the same honor is. Know the difference in your bones.

Fashionable work is a speech. Necessary work is a body in a chair. Four years of that is a career. If you are bored, you have misunderstood the job. The job is to be countable when the question is put.

Richard Henry moved it. Francis helped carry Virginia's two. A family motion that fails because the quiet brother wanted airtime is a farce. Second the house, not the surname. Then go home to Menokin when the roll no longer needs you.

Oratory is the display window. Committees are the shop. Quiet men who hate the window can own the shop. Own it. The war is fed in rooms without galleries. Be in those rooms until 1779, then leave because the county needs you more than the gallery does.

Two Lees

The Adamses were cousins. The Lees were brothers. Uniqueness is not a virtue by itself. It is a fact that has to be lived without theater. They lived it. Two names, one risk, no circus.

Tayloe land, Lee name, a house in the woods above a creek. He chose a life that could survive the adjournment of Congress. If you have no Menokin, the hall will own you. Own a creek.

After the aye, the hound. This looks like frivolity to the professional patriot. It is often sanity. A republic of men who cannot go home will become a court in a tavern.

No children to carry the name from that bed. The house went on without a dynasty. Devotion is a fact. So is a line that ends. Not every founder owes the census a tribe.
