Joke at the Table

Joke at the gallows-paper, not at the cause.
“I shall have a great advantage over you, Mr. Gerry, when we are all hung for what we are now doing. From the size and weight of my body I shall die in a few minutes, but from the lightness of your body you will dance in the air an hour or two before you are dead.”
To Elbridge Gerry, small and thin, as the signing went around. Famous. Not contemporary-safe. Treat the wording as legend. Treat the function as real: humor is how a heavy man carries a heavier wager.
Make the room breathe, then make it sign.

Harrison's joke and Franklin's joke are cousins. Gallows talk is not lightness. It is naming the price so the price cannot ambush you. A silent table is a table that may yet bolt.

He sat the committee that handled Lee's resolve. Wit did not excuse him from the gavel. The fat man in the stories was also the man who had to recognize speakers. Jokes are garnish. The roll is the meal.

Harrison's body joke and Franklin's noose joke are one technology. Say the cost in a voice that can still eat. Panic is quiet. Courage, in this room, is allowed to be funny. Then pass the paper.

The house paid. The joke at the table had always known this bill was coming. A plantation is a hostage you still have to live in. Do not be surprised when the enemy reads the map.

The signer stopped at governor. The son went further and died in a month. Dynasty is not a plan. It is a weather pattern. Do your office. Let the children surprise the census.
A great-grandson will take the chair again. You will not see it.

Two presidents from one James River table. This is not a merit badge for 1776. It is what land plus a name plus luck can do. The lesson for the signer was simpler: found a house that can survive you.
