The Room Before the Room

Win it before the vote is called.
“It is by united councils, a steady zeal, and a manly fortitude, that this continent must expect to recover its violated rights and liberties.”
The Caucus Club did the work the gallery later applauded. He was not waiting for a majority to feel brave. He was stacking rooms. The public session is a receipt. The caucus is the shop.
An irate minority is an engine, not a complaint.
“It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in the minds of men.”
Not his sentence. Diane Ackerman's, two centuries late. The life still fits it. He had no army and no fortune. He had the room before the room, and he never left it. Use the line as a description of the work, not as a relic of his pen.
Correspond until the towns are one mind.
“I have long thought that a consistent plan of Opposition can only be effected by a Correspondence and a Union of the Colonies.”
Separate communities will not accidentally agree. He built the mail that made them one argument. Union is not a feeling. It is a circuit. Wire it.
Jealousy, at the right hour, is a virtue.
“Jealousy, especially at such a time, is a political virtue: Nay, I will say, it is a moral virtue; for we are under all obligations to do what in us lies to save our country.”

Trust is a peacetime luxury. He wanted men awake in the dark. Suspicion aimed at power is maintenance. Suspicion aimed at everyone is rot. Know the difference. Then stay up.

Public Virtue

If they lose the virtue they will sell the rest.
“While the People are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their Virtue they will be ready to surrender their Liberties to the first external or internal Invader.”
He did not trust a parchment to outrun a vice. Public virtue is the only standing army that does not become a problem. Lose it and the invader can be a foreign fleet or a local appetite. Same door.
Diffuse knowledge or accept a master.
“If Virtue and Knowledge are diffus'd among the People, they will never be enslav'd. This will be their great Security.”
Not knowledge in a college. Diffused. He wanted the lowest ranks armed with the argument. A republic of experts is an oligarchy that can quote Locke. Spread it or watch it be rented.
The truest friend promotes the virtue, not the man.
“He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man.”

Personnel is the whole of politics. He said it at twenty-six and did not retire the sentence. Do not put a clever knave in the chair because he can win. You are not hiring a mascot. You are hiring a weather.
Salvation is not imported.
“It is the Business of America to take Care of herself — her salvation as you justly observe depends upon her own Virtue.”

No ministry, no merchant, no France will do this part. He put the business on the people. Harsh. Accurate. A country that waits to be rescued is already on the block.
Public virtue is the only standing army that does not become a problem.

The Street

“If you, or Colonel Dalrymple under you, have the power to remove one regiment you have the power to remove both. It is at your peril if you refuse. The meeting is composed of three thousand people. Night is approaching. An immediate answer is expected. Both regiments or none.”

The day after the massacre. Three thousand in the street, and he spoke like a clerk with a loaded clock. Peril is the right word. A crowd without a sentence is a riot. A sentence without a crowd is a memo. Hold both.
The body of the people must remain firm.
“The Body of the people remaind firm till the Merchts receded.”

Merchants blink. The body, if taught, does not. He trusted the street more than the counting house, and he was usually right. Do not let the men with inventory set the duration of a principle.
Night is a political hour.
“A thousand men are already arrived from the neighborhood, and the whole country is in motion. Night is approaching.”

He names the dark on purpose. Time is leverage. The governor can feel the sun going. So can you. Use the hour that makes delay look like cowardice. Then take the yes and send the men home.
Liberty is not a private hobby.
“It is not unfrequent to hear men declaim loudly upon liberty, who, if we may judge by the whole tenor of their actions, mean nothing else by it but their own liberty, — to oppress without control or the restraint of laws all who are poorer or weaker than themselves.”

He spotted the counterfeit early. The street is where you find out whether a man's liberty includes the poorer man. If it does not, he is reciting. Walk past.
A crowd without a sentence is a riot. A sentence without a crowd is a memo.

Stand firm as one man, on paper first.
“If you concur with us in opinion that our Rights are properly stated, you will doubtless think it of the utmost importance that we stand firm as one man, to recover and support them.”

Concurrence is the product. Not heat. A committee that only vents is a tavern. A committee that gets other towns to sign the same statement is a government in prototype. Collect the yeses.
An attack on one colony is the whole list.
“It has ever been my Opinion, that an Attack upon the Liberties of one Colony is an Attack upon the Liberties of all; and therefore in this Instance all should be ready to yield Assistance.”

Rhode Island's wound was Boston's. He refused the local reading. Committees exist to make that refusal operational. If the circuit is live, a blow lands everywhere. That is the point of the wire.
Make union visible so the lie has nowhere to sit.
“Should such Sentiments be as generally expressd, it must refute the insidious misrepresentation so industriously propagated on both sides of the Atlantick, that the people have not Virtue enough to resist.”

“Nil desperandum. That is a Motto for you and me. All are not dead; and where there is a Spark of patriotick fire, we will rekindle it.”
Warren had begun to sound finished. Adams sent Latin and a bellows. Despair is a receding with better manners. Rekindle is a job description. If a spark exists, your only task is air and fuel. Not a eulogy.
We cannot make events. We can refuse to waste them.
“We cannot make Events. Our Business is wisely to improve them.”

He was not a magician. He was a harvester. The massacre, the tea, the powder: none of them ordered from a catalog. Improve means: do not recede when the hour finally arrives. The event is a gift. Spending it on caution is vandalism.
They will not recede. Neither will you.
“Will it be likely then that your enemies, who have exerted every nerve to establish a revenue, will recede from the favorite plan, when they imagine it to be compleated by your submission?”

He strips the fantasy of a kind empire. Submission completes their work. Receding is how you become a precedent against yourself. Hold the point they most want. That is the whole map.
If you will not be free, no one can pity you into it.
“If a people will not be free; if they have not virtue enough to maintain their liberty against a presumptuous invader, they deserve no pity, and are to be treated with contempt and ignominy.”

Cold. He meant it. A committee cannot carry a people who have sold themselves. Pity is not a strategy. Contempt is the invoice for receding. Do not recede.
