The Cause of God and Country

Do not split the two causes. They do not split you.

Princeton, May 17, a fast day. The only minister who would sign. He put the hinge in one sentence: lose the civil, and the religious is a decoration the magistrate can pick off. If you keep a private faith in a public cage, you have already yielded.
Call the war by its right names.

Not a tax dispute. Not a mood. Justice, liberty, human nature. A pulpit that cannot say the nouns will spend the war on tone. Name the cause. Then the psalm makes sense.
An enemy to God is not a patriot in spare hours.

He said it in a church, not a caucus. The scruple he refused was the polite one: that belief and citizenship live on separate floors. They do not. A republic of atheists-of-convenience will not stay a republic. He did not care if that sounded unkind.
Ask that the two remain married.

A prayer, not a statute. Inseparable. The attempts to kill one might brace the other. That is providence as a political theory: the enemy's overreach as a tutor. Preach it. Then go to Congress in the same coat.
Piety without a spine is decoration.

Entire. He preached this in May and signed in July. A pulpit that cannot say that sentence is a piece of furniture.
The cause of God and country is one sentence. Do not split it for donors.

Best friend. Religion as engine, not as varnish. If it does not move a regiment or a vote, it is a hobby.
Preach as if the king were in the side aisle.

Field after cabinet. Sermons that never leave the building are rehearsals. Take them outside.
A minister who will not sign is a chaplain to the occupation.

Make Men

A college is a foundry, not a chapel annex.

Nassau Hall had been a school for ministers. He made it a school for the republic. Madison sat the lectures. A generation of officers and members went out. Piety without backbone is a decoration. Backbone without a curriculum is a mob. Make both.
Teach duty as a science, not a mood.
“Moral Philosophy is that branch of science which treats of the principles and laws of duty or morals. It is called philosophy, because it is an inquiry into the nature and grounds of moral obligation by reason, as distinct from revelation.”

He lectured it every year. Reason and revelation in the same building, not in a cage match. The point was not to baptize every syllogism. The point was to send out men who could think without asking London's leave — or a revivalist's.
Rebuild the hall when both armies have used it.

Princeton was a battlefield. Nassau Hall took cannon from both sides. He was in Congress, then back with a hat for money and a broom. A president who only writes sermons during a war has lost the college. Improve the threatening aspect. Repair the roof.
Turn out characters, not ornaments.

That is the catalog of the college: magistrates and ministers from the same benches. Witherspoon did not apologize for producing both. If your school cannot make a Madison and a pastor without despising one of them, close it.
Make men. The country is out of them.

Bring Scotland With You

Emigrate. Do not evaporate.

Yester. Edinburgh. Paisley. Then Princeton, 1768, after Rush and Stockton came to fetch him. He did not become a vague Atlantic man. He became a Scot in New Jersey, which is a more useful article. Bring the accent, the books, and the fight with the Moderates.
The old country is not a relic. It is a toolkit.

That sentence is Kirk history, not Boston pamphleteering. Covenanters, patronage fights, the memory of '45. He had been held by Highlanders as a young minister. Scotland taught him that civil and religious stand or fall together. He imported the lesson intact.
Satirize the polite clergy before you leave.

Ecclesiastical Characteristics, Glasgow, 1753: he mocked the Moderate party until they knew his name. Then America hired the mocker as a president. A man who cannot needle his own establishment will not resist someone else's. Pack the satire with the sermons.

He appended it to the fast-day sermon. The diaspora was an audience. He told them this soil was better and this cause was theirs. Immigration is not a disappearance. It is a second parish. Preach to it.
Bring Scotland with you. The kirk knows a tyrant.

Came. An ocean is not an excuse. Import the suspicion of bishops and kings. America can use it.
An imported conscience is still a conscience.

Faith That Thinks

Unexamined piety is a fashion.

Common Sense Realism, unpacked for boys who would write constitutions. Faith that will not think will be thought for. He would not outsource the moral law to London, or to a tremor in the meeting house. Reason is not the enemy of the pulpit. It is the spine.
Hold revelation and reason in one head.

The sentence is theology and political science at once. That is the method. Split them and you get a quietist and a cynic, sitting in different pews, both useless. One head. Both tools.
Be impatient of the unripe argument.
“In my judgment, sir, we are not only ripe, but rotting. Almost every colony has dropped from its parent stem.”

They said America was not ripe for independence. The reply — if he said it just so — is the method: do not let delay pose as prudence. A faith that thinks can smell when caution has become decay. Rot is not patience.
Firmness is a form of intelligence.

Just. Pure. Prudent. Three tests, then no fear. That is not enthusiasm. That is a checklist. Men who skip the tests are zealots. Men who take them and still fold are clerks. Be neither. Think, then stand.

Common sense is not a slur. It is a method. Teach it so the graduate can smell a sophist in Congress.
A doctrine that cannot survive a question should not survive a vote.

Made reasoners. The product again. Enthusiasm without argument is how mobs hire kings back.
Close the syllogism. Then close the regiment.

Do not outsource thinking to the louder pew.

Only clergyman among the fifty-six. He did not leave the cloth in Princeton. Congress got the minister, not a minister in mufti. If the office is true, it is true in the State House. Hiding it is already a politics.
Preach on the fast day. Then take the seat.

May 17, pulpit. June, elected. August, signed. The same duty, four names. Men who separate those duties will always have an excuse to skip one. He declined the excuse. So should you.

Board of War. Foreign Affairs. A hundred committees. The famous sermon is the doorway. The work is the rooms behind it. A public faith that only orates is a concert. He did the paperwork of a revolution. Do not hide in the pulpit either.
God and country, in that order, in public.

Inseparable, and said where people could hiss. He died in 1794, blind, still the president. The statue would be argued over later. That is not your problem. Your problem is whether you hid. He did not.
